Reading Scores
As good a guide as we've got!
Numerical point values assigned to books are a staple of many Language Arts and English classes. They create a streamlined way of assessing the difficulty of a book and ways to track a student's reading level. The systems are not without their flaws, especially in how hard it is to pin down a book's "difficulty" level, but the basic principles are in place.
Whether you just need a way to find the score for a book or a number of books within a certain range of scores, or you want to learn more about the various systems, we've tried to put together as comprehensive a guide as we could manage here!
A.R. score - Accelerated Reader
Accelerated Reader (AR) is software for primary and secondary schools used for monitoring the practice of reading. It was created by Renaissance Learning, Inc. There are two versions: a desktop version and a web-based version in Renaissance Place, the company's online portal.
Accelerated Reader has three functions:
-
Assessment of a student's reading
level -
Suggesting titles of books at that level
-
Assessing whether a student has completed reading a book

Lexile Score
The Lexile Framework for Reading is an educational tool that uses a measure to match readers with books. Readers and books are assigned a score on the Lexile scale, in which lower scores reflect easier readability for books and lower reading ability for readers.
The Lexile Framework uses quantitative methods, based on words and sentence lengths, rather than qualitative analysis of content for scores. The scores for texts do not reflect factors such as multiple levels of meaning or maturity of themes.
